What Is Boilerplate Anchor Text?
Posted on December 15, 2011 by Nick Wilson
Google has added a few changes to its algorithm and through this update a new term has developed. Boilerplate Anchor Text, a new concept that for SEO and link development. This rule states that if there is an over abundance of anchor text links, using the same anchor text, being directed to the same webpage, it will cause the webpages value and rank to diminish and become less relevant to the search topic at hand.
What Does This Mean
Most users would find this to be a contradictory update seeing as the more anchor text links you have the more relevance your webpage posses. The problem with the update, is that if Google finds to many links that use the same anchor text and direct to the same url, the links might be considered to be Blackhat or inorganically developed (purchased). For larger sites this can be a good thing though, say for example if you have a larger, older website. The massive amount of content can balance out the amount of links you have developed. Smaller and newer websites will most likely suffer from this update because traditional SEO strategies require copious link development from various sources and the update kind of made a tripe mine out of tradition.
How To Adapt
The creation of Boilerplate Anchor Text relies on two aspects that determine whether the webpage will rank well or not. Of course the overall result of this update is to help, so the result should be more relevant titles that are specific to the page’s content and the niche of the website.
- Content Relevance: If your website is based around cars and their performance and you link to a wallpaper website that features a car, you will most likey be penalized. What Google would like to see is a Car performance website linking to another Car based website, not a tangent of another niche that meagerly relates to yours.
- Amount of Anchor Text Links: There is no defined amount of backlinks you can build, but to air on the side of caution, I wouldn’t build them in bulk and I certainly wouldn’t purchase them. Try to target only high value/Pagerank/Alexarank backlinks that are able to offer much more than a lower quality links. The purpose being to maximize your limited amount of available anchor text links that any one keyword/term offers.
