While there are literally hundreds of SEO mistakes that are made every day by both seasoned and inexperienced web professionals, some are far more common than others. However, while these mistakes may happen frequently, they can be avoided. Here are the top 5 mistakes and their solutions.

Mistake 1 – Bad Keyword Strategy

When you are performing keyword searches, make sure to limit your results by searching for exact-match rather than broad-match terms. While it is worthwhile to have some broad keyword terms in your list, it is important to remember that broad terms will produce a lot of noise, which is virtually useless for sites trying to improve their rankings for a specific term.

For example, an SEO firm that is attempting to rank for “integrated SEO services” would never want to begin with “SEO” or “website services” as their targeted keywords. Instead, the site would want to target terms like “SEO services for business” or, more obviously, “integrated SEO services”.

Another common keyword strategy mistake is focusing too much on keywords, and not enough on branded anchor texts or using a naked URL. Mistake 2 – Not Respecting Link Destination Diversity

Many webmasters mistakenly believe that all links should be directed to their site’s homepage; however, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Much like for keywords, it is important to maintain a good balance of links pointing to internal pages, and links pointing to the homepage.

Internal links are important, but be sure not to over-do it. Building 100 links that point toward a single internal page, and none to the others, would make your site’s link profile look just as unnatural and spammy as building all links to the homepage.

To use the same example from mistake one, if the SEO firm in question built all of their links to the services page, and none to individual blog posts, that may be a red flag for Google.

Mistake 3 – Choosing Non-Buying-Intent Keywords

It’s no use ranking well for keywords that don’t result in conversions; choose terms that will convert at the highest rate. This means thorough keyword research must be performed to find out exactly how your customer searches for your website and, most importantly, which terms result in a sale and which result simply in traffic.

The way to avoid this mistake is to check for keywords within the Google keyword tools to see what iterations of your search terms are being searched for the most, and then monitor your site’s analytics to see if those match your sales. If you’re finding that some keywords produce far more hits, but few sales, don’t be afraid to mix up your terms in favor of those that are less popular, but have a higher conversion.

Mistake 4 – Not Giving Penalization Time to Heal

Before you submit your website for reconsideration to Google, you must make sure that you have actually fixed the problems that have been pointed out to you. For example, if your site was penalized for questionable link building, be sure to actually remove the links and build a few that are high quality before asking your site be re-indexed. Simply submitting over and over again will get you nowhere and may actually penalize your website.

Some webmasters think that if their actions are not completely overt that they will not be tracked by Google. For instance, submitting a website to hundreds of spam directories is something that Google will find no matter how small these directories might be.

Mistake 5 – Not Mapping Keywords to URLs

Most webmasters will take the time to map URLs to keywords, but they will overlook the importance of mapping keywords to URLs. Webmasters should choose best candidates for their keywords and not try to link every instance of every keyword to every URL within their power. This helps the internal linking structure of the website as well as minimizing the cannibalization that a website will receive from its own pages with old-school techniques that simply do not work anymore.
